Olympic Boom: Curlers Hit the Los Angeles Ice July 5-8 at the Hollywood Curling Summer Blockbuster Megaspiel

Tenth-anniversary tournament features fifty-six teams from all over the US and Canada, Celebrity Charity exhibition game.

(Santa Clarita, Calif.) July 2, 2018 – The Winter Olympics always brings lots of attention to the typically obscure sport of curling, and this year’s edition in Pyeongchang was especially successful, with the American men’s team taking home a gold medal for the first time this year. Coincidentally, this summer is the 10th anniversary of the Los Angeles metro area’s only curling tournament, and the Hollywood Curling Clubis turning its Hollywood Blockbuster Bonspiel into a Hollywood Blockbuster Megaspiel. (“Bonspiel” is curling for “tournament”.) From July 5 to 8, the coolest place to be will be Ice Station Valencia, as curlers from around the world—including former Olympians—will descend on Santa Clarita for a weekend of fun and competition.

The weekend's highlight will be a celebrity match on Saturday, July 7, pairing up Hollywood celebs and some of the world's best curlers. The event is open to the public, and confirmed participants include:

The celebrity game will begin at 8 PM at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Drive in Santa Clarita. Admission is free, but raffles, a silent auction, merchandise and more will raise funds for Hollywood Curling’s Dedicated Ice Initiative, as they work to build a dedicated facility for the Olympic sport of curling in Los Angeles. Friendly volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and explain the intricacies of the game.

The Summer Blockbuster Megaspiel will feature 56 teams and a total of 224 athletes from as nearby as Los Angeles and as far away as Scotland. Matches throughout the tournament will also be open to the public for spectating for no charge.

Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel matches will begin at 8 AM each day, with games continuing late into the evening. The opening ceremony will be at 3:15 PM on Friday, July 6. The championship match begins at 11 AM on Sunday, July 8, with trophies and medals given out during the awards ceremony at 1:45 PM. All games will take place at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Drive in Valencia.

    About Hollywood Curling

Founded in December 2007, Hollywood Curling is one of five curling clubs in California and the only club in Los Angeles County. The club’s goal is to introduce the sport of curling to the local community, to foster the social and competitive spirit of the sport and to teach and develop curlers to compete at the local, national and international levels. In addition to public Learn to Curl events, Hollywood Curling also hosts corporate events, private parties and a youth program called School of Rocks. About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing largely in part to televised coverage during the Winter Olympics, including a gold medal win for the US in Pyeongchang in 2018, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

In 2015, we raffled off a cruise just like the one we are raffling right now, and one of our members, Jason Horn, won the grand prize.  Here's what he had to say about it!

I write about food, drinks and travel for a living, and our Viking cruise took us places I would never have the opportunity to go otherwise. From a Benedictine abbey in Austria making apricot wines and jams to a Christmas market in Budapest (complete with ice rink! But no curling...), the Romantic Danube cruise features a ton of lovely stops in smaller cities American tourists almost never get to visit.

The ship is cozy, and the balcony stateroom is a nice place to watch the scenery roll by, but this is not like a giant Caribbean megaship—the good stuff is on land! Every day offers a bunch of excursion options, whether it's a basic city walking tour followed by a free afternoon or an exclusive tour of the BMW factory in Munich, and every evening on board features tasty food and a few choices of entertainment.

WOW!  The power of a gold medal! Thank you, Los Angeles, for all the love!

At the moment, all of our upcoming Learn to Curl classes are sold out. There's still a couple spots in our Valencia Curling Academy starting next week, and leagues starting in March, April and May still have room.

We will do our best to add more Learn to Curls on the calendar, but keep checking back, or join our mailing list to be the first to hear about more dates. You're welcome to join the waiting list for any Learn to Curl classes coming up.

Thanks for understanding that we've had an incredible response from the Olympics, greater than we ever could have imagined or prepared for. We apologize if it takes longer than usual to respond to emails or phone calls at the moment!

WOW! Los Angeles, We love you!

We can't believe how fast our Learn to Curls and events are selling out. Pasadena is almost completely booked. But don't worry, we have lots of space in our upcoming events in Valencia, and we're adding more for March this week, so stay tuned!

For those that want in on the action in Pasadena, please join us for our Open Houses this Sunday, Feb 18 at 10am, or Monday, Feb 19 at 6pm.  We strongly recommend signing up in advance to help secure your spot, but walk ups will be taken at the door based on our availability.

Also, consider joining us in March for a 2 week Curling Academy class, where we'll build on what you learn the first night, and give you some game play experience and coaching in smaller groups.  This is a great way to get in and learn even more, and have an even better, more personal introduction to the sport!

See you all on the ice soon!

Los Angeles, you've come to the right place! We are the only place in LA county where you can get your curl on! So if you've been watching during the Olympics, and you want to know how to get involved, we've got several ways to help you break into the roaring game!

    How to become a curler:

Come join us for one of our Open House sessions on Feb. 18 or 19 in Pasadena.  This drop in event is perfect for someone wanting to learn more and get the hang of the sport. We'll have multiple stations so that you can try your hand at delivering a stone, sweeping it to the button, and making a few shots.

Want to get a little more of a lesson? Join us for any of our Learn to Curl classes for a 90 minute lesson. You'll work with one of our crack instructors, who will have you sliding, sweeping and cheering your way to curling glory in no time!

Want to get even more of an immersion in the sport? Try one of our Curling Academies, and build on your new skills each week. Each class starts with 30 minutes of drills and skill building, followed by a game with coaching to help get you ready to join a league.

Ready to dive right in? Sign up for any of our upcoming leagues, and you'll also learn more about the game as you go!

Best of all, we have our big tournament, called the Summer Blockbuster Megaspiel, happening in July, and with a beginner-friendly division, this is the perfect chance for you to cement your love of the sport! Our tournament is infamous, and regarded across the continent as the summer spiel rival all spiels!

Have questions? Don't hesitate to contact us!
